Notes for Stanley Roland Davison Ph.D.
Stanley R. Davison was born in East Helena on May 6, 1911. "Following graduation from Helena High School, he attended the University of Montana, earning a B.A. degree in English and M.A. in History, prior to a doctorate in History from the University of California at Berkeley."11
"He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy service during World War II and, during the Korean Conflict, was an instructor for the Armed Forces Education Service in that Asiatic outpost."11
Stanley joined the faculty at Western Montana College in Dillon, Montana in 1957 and retired in 1978. After his retirement, he continued to fill part-time posts until his death.
"Davison also contributed significantly to the Montana Historical Society as a member of the editorial board of "Montana the Magazine of Western History" for fifteen years and as a frequent contributor to its pages. In 1982, he received the MHS Board of Trustees Award for Contributions to Montana History."12
Stanley was well-regarded as a researcher and as a historian. "For several years, Davison served on the Montana Historical Records Advisory Committee. Former State Archivist Brian Cockhill recalls how diligent Davison was in collecting and preserving historical records: 'Of all the members of that committee, Stan was the one we could count on for thoughtful and consistent work. And as a researcher,' Cockhill added, 'he was as thorough in his method as he was energetic in investigating traditional historical topics such as early transportation and the history of reclamation."12 Many of Stanley's notes are used in this genealogy as well.
